Odometer brands at US auctions: Actual, Not Actual, Exempt

Next to the mileage the auction states its type. It shows whether the mileage can be trusted.

Odometer types

  • Actual – the true mileage according to the documents.
  • Not Actual – the mileage may not be accurate (for example the odometer was replaced or a discrepancy is noted in the documents).
  • Exempt – exempt from odometer disclosure: older cars in the USA may be exempt from mandatory mileage disclosure, so the mileage is not certified.
  • Exceeds Mechanical Limits – the mileage is beyond the odometer's limit (old five-digit odometers start again after 99,999 miles).

Miles and kilometres

US mileage is in miles. 1 mile is about 1.61 km. Our website shows the mileage in kilometres.

How to check the mileage

The mileage records over the car's whole history are shown by a Carfax report (5 €). If the odometer type is "Not Actual" or "Exempt", judge the car by its condition and history, not by the number on the odometer.
