Registering a car from the USA in Lithuania: certification, inspection, Regitra

For a car from the USA to drive on Lithuanian roads, it must be cleared through customs, repaired if needed, adapted to EU requirements, certified and registered. Here is the whole way.

Steps

  • Customs clearance in Klaipėda: duty and VAT are paid (see Customs duty and VAT).
  • Repair, if the car is damaged.
  • Adaptation to EU requirements, most often the lights (see Adaptation to EU requirements).
  • A technical inspection for individual approval at an authorised company and, separately, the compulsory roadworthiness test.
  • Compulsory motor third-party liability insurance.
  • The registration (pollution) tax (see Registration (pollution) tax).
  • Registration at Regitra and plates.

Documents you need

  • The US ownership document (title).
  • The purchase invoice.
  • Customs documents (import declaration).
  • The technical inspection certificate (individual approval) and a valid roadworthiness test.

We hand over the title and customs documents together with the car.

Important before you buy

Not every car can be registered: it depends on the US title type (see Salvage, Clean, Rebuilt). In the search the titles are coloured, and the title check shows whether a title can be registered. We do not provide certification or registration services ourselves, but we advise. The whole way after purchase – After purchase.
