Adapting to EU requirements: what a car from the USA needs changed

A used car from outside the EU (for example the USA) goes through a technical inspection for individual approval in Lithuania. The requirements differ from the US ones, so before the inspection a car from the USA usually needs a few changes.

The most common changes

  • Rear turn signals: they must shine amber, while on US cars they are often red.
  • A rear fog light (red): mandatory, but US cars usually have none. A certified light is fitted in the right place, with a switch within the driver's reach and a warning lamp.
  • Speedometer: it must show the speed at least in kilometres per hour.
  • Bulbs: LED bulbs may not be put into lights made for filament bulbs.

What the inspection checks

  • All mandatory lights and their colours. Headlights marked with US (DOT, SAE) or EU marks are accepted, so they usually need no replacing.
  • Wheel alignment (toe, camber, caster): a check certificate and report are needed.
  • The manufacturer's identification plate on the car.
  • Compliance with the emission requirements (model year 2002 and newer): for cars made for the US market the experts help find the document.
  • The car comes with a full fuel tank, as it is weighed.

What it costs

The cost depends a lot on the model: for some it is enough to reprogram or change bulbs, others need new lights. The certification company gives the exact list of work – ask them before you buy.

After the changes – technical inspection and registration. See Registering in Lithuania and After purchase.
