Copart damage codes: the full list explained

For every car Copart gives a primary and a secondary damage as a two-letter code. Here is Copart's full list explained, based on the auction's own help center.

Damage groups

  • Normal Wear – only very minor damage.
  • Minor Dents & Scratches – scratches and a few dents, e.g. from hail or a parking lot.
  • Minor to Heavy Damage – noticeable damage after an accident: Front End, Rear End, Side, All Over.
  • Stripped – parts removed: wheels, doors, mirrors, the hood or others.
  • Water/Flood – part of the car was under water: from wet floorboards to fully submerged.
  • Burn – the car has burnt.

  • ST (Stripped) – parts removed.
  • TP (Top/Roof) – the roof.
  • UK (Unknown) – damage unknown.
  • UN (Undercarriage) – the underside, the chassis.

  • VN (Vandalism) – vandalism.
  • VP (Replaced VIN) – the VIN has been replaced.
  • WA (Water/Flood) – water, flood.

Worth knowing

  • The primary and secondary damage matter equally: Copart says neither carries more significance than the other.
  • The codes show only known or reported damage, and the auction itself does not guarantee their accuracy: look at all the photos and the Carfax report.
  • Avoid VI, VP and CC cars: with an altered VIN registering may run into problems, and CC cars are usually good for parts only.
  • More on damage types – Damage types, on titles – Salvage, Clean, Rebuilt.
