Frequently asked questions

Buying and auctions

Why buy a car from US auctions?

The price of a car at a US auction is often much lower than for the same model in Lithuania or Europe, but the final amount depends on repairs, shipping and taxes. Cars from the USA usually have better equipment, and once the car is shipped and repaired you will know its history well.

What are the most popular US car auctions?

Copart and IAAI. These are auctions of damaged vehicles, which are mostly sold by insurance companies. On this website you can search both.

What must I know before buying a car at an auction?

The seller is never responsible for the car's condition and sells it as it is at the seller's, so read all the information carefully and look through all the photos. Pay attention to the document type, because not all are suitable for registration in Lithuania, and to the seller type. It is worth checking the car's history by its VIN. Ask us about a history report.

Where do I start?

Think about which models interest you, what requirements you have and what budget you can spend. Then contact us and we will sign an intermediary agreement.

Will you help me choose a car?

Yes. Send us the LOT number or the auction link, or simply write what car you are looking for and what your budget is. We will review the photos, damage, document type, mileage and the car's location in the USA, calculate a preliminary price to Lithuania and tell you what to pay attention to. You decide which car to buy and the maximum amount to bid.

Do I take part in the auction myself?

We place the bid at the auction, and you decide the amount: on the car's page you set the highest amount you are prepared to pay, and we bid no more. Often the car can be bought for less. You can change the amount until 3 hours before the auction; a bid already placed can only be raised. If your deposit is not enough for a higher amount, top it up in your account.

Soon you will also be able to bid yourself at live Copart and IAAI auctions: after paying the deposit you will get personal login details, and you will also be able to bid in the mobile app. The terms are the same, and so is the deposit.

How do Copart and IAAI auctions work?

Most auctions have two stages. First, pre-bidding takes place over a few days. On the auction day the live auction begins: it starts from the highest pre-bid and lasts just a few minutes. Some cars are sold in timed auctions that end at a set time, and some can be bought straight away at a fixed "Buy now" price.

What do "On approval" and "Minimum bid" mean?

It means that the seller must approve the final price or has set a minimum price. After winning such an auction the seller's answer usually takes 1–3 business days. If the seller does not approve the price, the purchase does not go ahead and the deposit stays yours: it is returned or used to buy another car.

Can I bid on several cars at once?

Yes. Each car needs a separate deposit: 10 % of the maximum bid, but not less than 700 EUR. Remember that if you win several auctions, you will have to buy all the cars you won.

Can I buy a car for a company?

Yes. We make the contract with the company, issue the invoices to the company, and the company pays the deposit and other amounts from its own bank account. We clear the car through customs in our own name, so no EORI code is needed, unless a VAT-registered company wants the car cleared in its own name. We will need the company details and its VAT code (if it has one).

Why is an agreement signed?

So that the client and our team have clear duties and commitments to each other. Having signed the agreement, you will know what to expect and what to demand if questions arise.

Deposit and payments

Why is a deposit needed and how much is it?

The deposit is 10 % of the most you are ready to pay for the car, but not less than 700 EUR. It is not an extra fee: if you win the auction, the deposit is counted towards the final amount. If you do not win, we return it within 3 business days or, if you prefer, keep it for another car.

Why at least 700 EUR? We answer to the auction for every car we win. If a buyer changes their mind or refuses to buy, the auction still charges us a fine and fees that come to about 700 EUR even for an inexpensive car. The minimum deposit covers exactly that, so we can bid quickly for every buyer, and it costs nothing to anyone who goes on to buy the car.

If you win the auction and refuse to buy, you have to pay the auction's fine, which is 10–20 % of the final bid. The fine and other actual losses are covered from the deposit first; the same applies if, after winning the auction, the car is not paid for on time, as described below.

How do I find out how much the car will cost in Lithuania?

On every car's page the price is already calculated in the "Price in Lithuania" section: the "Buy now" price or the next possible bid is filled in, and you can enter your own amount and choose the body type. If you found the car elsewhere, for example on Copart or IAAI itself, work out the price in the calculator: choose the auction, the yard, the vehicle type and the amount.

What makes up the final price of the car?

The price has two parts, paid at different times. Within the next business day after winning you pay:

Before the car arrives in Klaipėda, within 3 business days of our notice, you pay:

  • transport to Klaipėda: trucking in the USA from the yard to the port, the sea container and the US export documents;
  • import duty: 0 % for cars made in the USA (from 1 July 2026), 10 % for other cars, 8 % for motorcycles up to 250 cm³ and 6 % above, 1.7 % for jet skis;
  • import VAT of 21 %, calculated on the full value: the auction price, auction fees, transport, port services and duty;
  • port fees and customs clearance in Klaipėda: 370 EUR.

You will see all the amounts for a particular car on its page or in the calculator.

Is the calculator's price final?

The calculator uses today's logistics rates and the European Central Bank exchange rate including currency transfer costs, so the price is accurate for that day. It may change if the auction invoice has extra fees, the exchange rate changes on the day of payment or customs assesses the car's origin or value differently. You can always ask us before bidding.

I won the auction. How long do I have to pay the remaining amount?

Pay the car's price, the auction fees and our service fee in your account through your bank within the next business day. If you miss it, you can still pay without extra costs until 12:00 on the second business day. After that you cover the actual late and storage fees of the auction and the carrier plus default interest (0.05 % per day). If the car is not paid within 5 business days, the order is cancelled: the car goes back to the auction or is resold, and the losses are covered from the deposit. Transport, port fees, duty and VAT you pay later: within 3 business days of our notice, before the car arrives in Klaipėda.

How and to whom do I pay for the car?

After winning the auction we send you an invoice in euros for the car's price, the auction fees and our service fee, with the deposit counted in: you pay it within the next business day. While the car is on its way, we send a notice and a second invoice for transport, port fees, duty and VAT: you pay it within 3 business days, before the car arrives in Klaipėda. You pay both to our Lithuanian bank account, and we pay the auction, the carriers and customs.

Shipping and documents

How long will the car take to reach Lithuania?

Usually from 5 to 12 weeks. The time can be affected by an inconvenient auction location, port congestion, weather and document delays.

How do I find out where the car is?

As soon as the car is loaded into a container, we send you a tracking code and loading photos. With the code you can track the shipment throughout the journey. On arrival, customs clearance and paperwork take about another week.

Why might the car be late leaving the USA?

The car is shipped only when the port terminal has received both the car and the auction documents. Auctions sometimes send the documents later, and in some cases they need extra checking or fixing. Terminal and port congestion also affects the time.

Can you deliver the car to my home?

Yes. Our partner carrier delivers the cleared car from the port terminal in Klaipėda by car transporter to a place of your choice in Lithuania. The price depends on the distance and the size of the car: we tell you in advance, and you pay the carrier directly on delivery. You can also collect the car at the port terminal in Klaipėda yourself.

Is the car insured during shipping?

No. We do not offer transport insurance: insurers practically do not cover damaged cars. If the car is damaged in transit, the carrier compensates under its terms and we help you file the claim. So inspect the car as soon as you receive it and report any damage within 5 days.

When will I get the car's documents?

You get the original US ownership document (title) and the keys together with the car, when you collect it at the port terminal in Klaipėda or when the carrier delivers it to you. The title is needed for registration at Regitra, and we email the invoices and the other documents.

Why is shipping an electric car or hybrid more expensive?

Because of their lithium batteries, electric cars and hybrids are shipped under the rules for dangerous goods, with special marking and loading, so transport costs more. The calculator and the car page take this into account automatically.

Can you ship an electric or hybrid car from Hawaii?

No. Shipping a damaged electric or hybrid car needs a special non-flammable container, and there are none from Hawaii to mainland ports. So we cannot bid on such cars: in the search and on the car page they are marked in red "Cannot be shipped".

Can I buy a car with a Flood title?

"Flood" in the title name means the car was under water. A petrol or diesel car like this can be shipped, and if the title also says "Salvage" (for example "Salvage title – Flood damage"), it can also be registered in Lithuania.

A hybrid or electric car with a Flood title cannot be shipped by sea, so we cannot bid on such cars: in the search and on the car page they are marked in red "Cannot be shipped". If the auction gives no fuel type and the title says "Flood", bidding through the site is not possible: ask us and we will check.

What if the auction does not have the car's title yet?

Auctions do not commit to when they will receive and hand over a missing title: even when the listing says the title is there, sometimes it is not. Until the title arrives the car cannot be exported, and the yard may charge storage. Cars whose documents are still awaited are marked "(P)" on our site.

Customs and registration in Lithuania

What import taxes apply?

Before registering a car from the USA, import duty and VAT must be paid. From 1 July 2026 the EU import duty on cars made in the USA (of US origin) is 0 % (Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 (opens in a new window)). Duty rates are published in the EU customs tariff database TARIC (opens in a new window). For cars made elsewhere, for example made in Japan or Germany and sold in the USA, the duty remains 10 % of the auction purchase price plus the auction fees and shipping costs. For motorcycles the duty is 8 % up to 250 cm³ and 6 % above, for jet skis 1.7 % (also 0 % if made in the USA). Lithuania applies the standard VAT rate of 21 %, calculated on the price with auction fees, shipping and import duty. Customs finally confirms the origin from the documents. You can work out all the amounts for a particular car in the calculator.

How do I know whether a car was made in the USA?

Look at the first character of the VIN: 1, 4 or 5 (and some codes starting with 7) mean the car was made in the USA. In our search and on the car page such cars are marked "Built in the USA". What matters is where the car was made, not the brand: for example, a BMW or Mercedes-Benz made in the USA is also of US origin, while a Toyota made in Japan is not. Customs finally confirms the origin from the documents.

How do I decode a VIN?

A VIN is the car's 17-character code. Enter it in the VIN decoder and see for free what the manufacturer registered: model, year, engine, power, transmission, trim and safety equipment. On the car page there is a "Decode VIN" link next to the VIN. The decoder does not show the car's history: accidents, mileage and previous owners are in a Carfax report.

Is a registration (pollution) tax paid when registering the car?

Yes, if the car's CO2 emissions exceed 130 g/km. In Lithuania, a registration tax, also called the pollution tax, is paid when a passenger car (M1) or light commercial vehicle (N1, e.g. a pickup) is registered. Its amount depends on the CO2 figure and fuel type; electric cars do not pay it. Regitra's calculator (opens in a new window) gives a preliminary amount, and we will help estimate it for a particular car (see Registration (pollution) tax).

How do certification and registration of the car work?

For a car from the USA to be registered in Lithuania, all import taxes must first be paid and the right US documents must be in place. Then the car must be repaired and adapted to European Union requirements, pass a technical inspection for individual approval (certification) and the compulsory roadworthiness test, and the registration (pollution) tax must be paid. With the inspection certificate and a valid roadworthiness test, the car can be registered at Regitra. The whole way – Registering in Lithuania. We advise on this, but we do not provide these services ourselves.

What has to be changed for a car from the USA to meet European requirements?

Most often the lighting has to be adapted: the rear turn signals must shine amber, and a rear fog light has to be fitted with a switch and a warning lamp. Headlights with US (DOT, SAE) marks are accepted. The speedometer must show km/h, and a wheel alignment certificate and the manufacturer's identification plate are needed. The requirements are set by LTSA order No 2BE-281 (opens in a new window), and the exact list for a particular car is given by the company carrying out the technical inspection (see Adaptation to EU requirements).

Do I need an EORI code?

Usually not. We clear the car from the USA through customs in our own name, so neither you nor your company needs an EORI code. If your company is VAT-registered and wants the car cleared in its own name (e.g. to account for the import VAT in its own VAT return), enter the company's EORI code in your account. An EORI code is needed by those who handle import, export or transit procedures with customs themselves.

Condition, damage and document types

Are flooded cars (Water / Flood) checked at the terminal?

No. Flooded cars are not started or tested at the terminal, so we only know their condition from the auction description (for example "Run & drive"). Buy such a car only after weighing the risk.

What are the document types and can they be registered?
  • Clear / Clean title: clean documents, can be rebuilt and registered.
  • Salvage title: documents of a damaged car, can be rebuilt and registered.
  • Junk title: cannot be rebuilt or registered.
  • No title / Parts only: no documents or the car is for parts only, cannot be rebuilt or registered.
  • Non repairable: cannot be rebuilt or registered.
  • Scrap certificate of title: cannot be rebuilt or registered.
  • Bill of sale: cannot be rebuilt or registered. Exception: a Washington State Bill of Sale can be registered, but export needs extra certificates (about 2 weeks, 100 USD), so ask us.
  • Certificate of destruction: cannot be rebuilt or registered.
  • Wait certificate: waiting for the proper document to be issued.
  • Flood (in the name): the car was under water. A petrol or diesel car can be shipped, and with "Salvage" also registered; a hybrid or electric car cannot be shipped.

Always check the document type before bidding. All Copart and IAAI document types with explanations are on the Document types page.

What does the document colour next to the car mean?
  • Green: the document can be registered in Lithuania.
  • Yellow: the document is unclear or problematic; ask us before bidding.
  • Red: a car with this document cannot be registered in Lithuania.
  • Grey: this document is not on our list yet; ask us.

The colour is a guide, not a guarantee: the final decision depends on the repair, the technical inspection and Regitra, the Lithuanian vehicle registry. All the types are on the Document types page.

What does the orange warning on the photo mean?

It marks higher-risk cars: when the seller is not an insurance company, dealer or fleet, or when the same car (by VIN) was already sold at another auction and is for sale again: it may be a new incident after a repair, but often it is a reseller's quick patch-up. When the same lot only missed the seller's minimum, the buyer did not pay, or the car was offered before without a sale, there is no orange warning: we explain it next to the price. The dates, results and prices of previous auctions are on the car page. Such a car can be bought, but it is worth asking us before bidding. A red "Cannot be shipped" means we cannot ship this car and it cannot be bid on.

What do (P) next to the document and pending documents mean?

(P) on the auction website means "pending": the auction is still waiting for this car's documents. On our website such cars are marked with a "Title pending" badge, and we do not show them in the Popular and Buy now lists. They can be bought, but we cannot ship the car until the documents are sorted out.

While the documents are awaited, the car stays at the auction yard and a parking fee of 5 EUR per day may be charged. How long this will take is not known in advance, so it is worth adding a reserve to your budget. Ask us before bidding.

What do the damage types mean?
  • All over: damaged in many places, more than 2.
  • Biohazardous / Chemical: damage from chemicals or blood.
  • Burn engine: the engine bay was affected by fire.
  • Burn interior: the car's interior was affected by fire.
  • Burn: burnt car.
  • Front end: front damage, an impact to the front.
  • Hail: hail damage.
  • Mechanical: engine, electrical, gearbox or axle defects.
  • No visible damage: no visible damage; the car may be sound or broken.
  • Reject repair: repaired after an accident, but the owner gave up the car for unknown reasons.
  • Rollover: the car rolled over.
  • Rear end: rear damage, an impact to the rear.
  • Side: the side is damaged.
  • Stripped: stolen, parts removed, doused with chemicals.
  • Top / Roof: roof deformation or damage.
  • Unknown: unknown damage; the car may be sound.
  • Undercarriage: an impact from below, possible chassis damage.
  • Vandalism: a car damaged by vandals.
  • Water / Flood: the car was damaged by water, flooded.
What do the mileage types mean?
  • Actual: true mileage.
  • Not actual: the odometer is faulty and the mileage is unknown.
  • Exceeds mechanical limits: on older cars the mileage no longer matters and is not recorded.
  • Exempt: old cars, trucks, boats and buses are exempt from mileage recording.
How do I order a Carfax report and how much does it cost?

On the Carfax page or a car's page, enter the VIN and your contact details. The report costs 5 EUR; once the payment arrives, we email it as a PDF, and the invoice in a separate email.

With a paid deposit, 3 reports are free, and the report of a car bought through us is free.

Search and website

Are all Copart and IAAI cars in your search?

The search shows Copart and IAAI auctions that already have a sale date. If you cannot find a car or it does not have an auction date yet, send us the LOT number or link and we will check.

How do I find out what a car might sell for?

Nobody knows the exact price in advance; the auction decides it. On the car page we show a statistical auction price: what similar cars sold for at auction. It is not a guarantee. The price of "Buy now" cars is fixed.

Can I see what similar cars sold for?

Yes. In the search choose "Finished auctions": there you will see finished Copart and IAAI auctions and their final prices in US dollars. Above the results, the lowest, median and highest price of that page's sales is shown. These are past sales, not a guarantee of future prices: the price depends on the car's condition, mileage, document and the auction day.

Where are favorite cars saved?

When you tap the heart, the car is saved only in this browser on this device. You will not see it on another device, and clearing the browser data deletes the favorites. Cars from finished auctions are removed from the favorites automatically.

Can I save a search and get new auctions by email?

Yes. Under the search results click "Save search": it appears in the "My searches" line under the search form (all its filters and actions behind the bookmark at the top or "Manage"), and a green number shows how many new auctions appeared since you last looked. Searches are kept only in this browser.

Click "Get new auctions by email" and confirm your address with the link in the email, and once a day you get the new auctions of that search. You can unsubscribe at any time with the link in every email.
